Sorry I'm late." Figol said as he rushed up to the greenrider, "I had to clear the tables after dinner." "Not a problem, I remember the chores. I love being a rider." she laughed.

Figol rolled his eyes, someday he'd be important too and then _he_
wouldn't have to do chores either. "So... I've got a little over an hour before I have to be in the workshop..."

"What's in the workshop?" she asked, momentarily forgetting about the rumors she'd heard.

"My guitar, remember?" Did she never pay attention to what he was saying? "Journeyman Kwiksol let me start making one. I haven't gotten much done on it actually, I've been kind of busy, but I told him I would be there today, so I can't blow him off." "You did tell me, sorry I forgot, it's just that somethings been on my mind."

He started to walk with her since it didn't appear that they were going to do anything interesting, "Oh, what?"

"Well, it's just that I heard some rumors this morning." she paused not sure how to say it. "About us."

"About _us_, us?" Figol asked with a start, he hadn't heard any talk about them, "I didn't say anything inappropriate about you Aletta, I wouldn't do that." She might be bossy and arrogant, but they were friends, and he wouldn't do anything to slander her name. "I didn't think you did, and besides the rumors are mostly about you. Well me too, but the ones I heard today were mostly you."

Figol's cheeks flushed slightly, embarrassed that he might have said too much about his recent trains of thought. "Well, what did these rumors say about me?"

"That your twelve turns and that your not even out of Harper classes." she ducked her head and mumbled. "A few things about us too. They think there is an us."

It hurt his pride somewhat that just because he was short people thought he was twelve, but he didn't really care about the harper classes. Aletta's reputation on the other hand... "I thought in a weyr it was okay for us to be friendly. Maybe though we shouldn't go off by ourselves, like out swimming, if people are going to get the wrong idea." "It is okay to go swimming and things like that, it's just that people are wondering why I would be interested in a harper apprentice. I don't know what they think, it's confusing, I guess it's just talk."

Now Figol was confused. It was okay for her to go off and be _alone_
with him, but _not_ for her to be friends with a harper? Or was it the apprentice part? He felt anger start to mix with the confusion, "Are you saying that people don't think I'm good enough for you? Is that what's bothering you, that people will think you're socializing beneath your status as a rider? I thought they didn't care about that sort of thing here at the Weyr?" "I DON"T KNOW WHAT THEY THINK!" she snarled, louder than she intended. The greenrider didn't notice people turning to look. "I don't pay attention to people most of the time, and it's not that I think your below me or anything." she sighed with frustration kicking the sand. "I don't know what I think Figol."

"Now, now, don't get all upset." Figol tried awkwardly to calm the girl down. Privately, he thought it was just like a girl to throw a big fit when _he_ had been the one insulted. "I'm sorry it's just I'm confused. I don't know what to think. No one has ever told rumors around me."

He was glad the he wasn't the _only_ one confused! "Look, nothing in those rumors are true, so don't worry about them." He hoped that sounded good enough to soothe her. "Thanks, I have a wing meeting in a half a candlemark, I should get changed." Aletta smiled tiredly. "I mean it Figol, thanks."

"Um, yeah sure." he replied as she walked away. Her rapid change of moods and abrupt departure left him even more confused than before. Was she mad at him? Did he say or do something wrong? Figol wasn't sure, but he did know that he didn't know anything about girls!
