Description: A new goldrider arrives at the Weyrhold
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 12, day 23 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: K'ran, Bilpen, Kapera, Teseada
She knew another gold rider would be arriving today and the headwoman
was prepared. The new riders weyr had been furnished and practically
sparkled with newness and how clean everything was.
She smiled to herself when she heard the familiar salute from the
watchdragon on the heights, now that they actually had watchdragons,
she didn't have to have runners stationed outside to summon her when a
ranking rider appeared. So she was able to take a little time to get
down the stairs and out into the bowl.
"Welcome," she waved at the goldrider and then cropped into a curtsy
as she would have to any Lady Holder.
Ashela inclined her head, accepting the curtsy as her due. She and her
lifemate had circled the new Weyrhold several times before landing,
taking in the amount of work that had already been done. Despite
herself, she was impressed. She'd been half afraid she would end up
living in a tent or some makeshift cabin for the first few sevendays.
"Thank you," she replied, with a charming smile for the woman who'd
approached her. Removing her riding helmet, she shook out her hair in
a practiced gesture. "I am Ashela, rider of Aglayath. And you must
be...the Headwoman?" She recognized the knots even if she didn't know
the name.
"Yes ma'am," Jayzine nodded with a graceful bow of her head. "I am
Jayzine, formerly of Riverbluff Weyr. Lord K'ran asked me to come and
organize the domestic side of the Weyr while Master Bilpen handles the
construction itself."
"I see. Then well met, Headwoman Jayzine," Ashela replied courteously.
If she became Weyrwoman, Jayzine would be her Headwoman, unless she
chose another. Until then, she could be a useful ally. "As a
goldrider, I used to work with the Headwoman back at Dream's End Weyr.
I'd be happy to assist you in any way I can."
"I would be very grateful Lady Ashela," Jayzine nodded. "Would you
like to see your quarters? They're junior gold rider at least until
the first rise."
"Yes, of course." As long as the others had the same. She asked Aglayath
to fly up to join them once she'd been shown to the weyr, promising her
a proper scrubbing and oiling once they were settled in. The gold had
been eyeing the clear waters of the lake, and the dragons splashing
there with interest.
"Are the other goldriders already here?" she asked as they walked. She
could have asked Aglayath, but she wanted to find out as much as she
could about them first. "I'm looking forward to meeting them."
"We'll get together soon as you and the others have had a chance to
settle in. Yes" Jayzine nodded. "Both Kapera and Teseada are already
here and have their quarters. There are a couple to choose from but I
like this one the best," She said and opened an ornately carved door.
"It has windows," she smiled.
"Oh!" Ashela's fingers brushed over the smooth carved lines as she
stepped into the weyr, and her reaction was, for once, one of genuine,
instinctive delight rather than pretence. Though smaller, it was far
more lovely than her weyr back at Dream's End, the light from the
windows making it seem more spacious, not less. There was a desk, newly
carved as expertly as the door, chairs and couches decorated in soft,
jewel-toned fabrics for entertaining visitors, and she could see through
an arch to the bed in a cosy alcove. "It's wonderful. The crafters must
have worked so hard." If this was for a junior goldrider, she thought,
what must the Weyrwoman's quarters be like? She couldn't wait to find out.
"They have indeed, My Lady," Jayzine nodded. She folded her hands in
front of her. "You will meet Master Bilpen very shortly I'm sure. All
this," she swept her hand out to indicate the whole room, "was his
vision."
"I'll have to thank him when I do. I shall be very comfortable here."
She wandered about the room, letting her hand trail over the elegant
curved back of a chair. Remembering the advantages of ingratiating
herself with the Headwoman, she turned to face Jayzine. "Is there
anything I can do to help, once I'm settled in? Aglayath and I are eager
to get started."
"That is incredibly nice of you My Lady," Jayzine nodded. "I thought
we could get together with Lady Kapera and Lady Teseada to work out a
schedule for some of the things we're going to need to get done right
away. There is a great deal of gathering needed and the teams should
be supervised. We have no stocks of fellis, or numbweed to draw upon
at this time."
"Of course. I used to do such duties at Dream's End." Only when she'd
not been able to avoid them, which had been most of the time under
Yvonnes, but she kept that to herself. "I could go and speak with the
healers here, find out what they need most. I'm sure I can charm some
supplies up for them from somewhere. The other Weyrs have been very
supportive, as I'm sure you know."
Ashela's eyes sparkled with bright, knowing charm. "I am most eager to
get started." In so many ways...
