Cortana

Cortana

The bright afternoon sun shone down on the group of
weyrlings as they finished yet another ground drill.
Cortana sighed in obvious relief as the
Weyrlingmaster called the end of the drill.

Without waiting, Cortana placed the bag of firestone
back on the pile. Wiping sweat from her forhead, she
retied her hair in its ponytail. Many people had
told her she should cut it. She wasn't sure yet.
For now she was content to leave it the way it was,
she liked her hair.

She walked up to her dragonet, Anath. The little
green was glowing in the sun, a tiny snot bubble
sitting on her left nostril. Cortana smiled.
Trill, her green flit, detached herself from the
everpresent fair of fire-lizards sleeping with
Anath. She squawked chidingly at her owner.

"I know, I know. Lets go find him now." Cortana
followed the large straw hat as it passed through
the crowd of weyrlings that were heading to bath
before dinner.

"V'con," she called. She had made it a challenge
for herself to learn the names of all her fellow
weyrlings. "V'con." she called again, catching up
with the bluerider and placing a hand on his
shoulder to stay his process.

"Cortana!" V'con smiled as his fellow weyrling
caught up with him. "How did you go with that
drill?" His own blue had enjoyed watching them for
the fist few minutes, before Cacholetyth grew tired
and fell asleep.

"Oh, fine. And how is Cacholetyth?" Trill chirped
and nudged Cortana's cheek.

**I know you silly creature. But I have to be
polite.** she mentally called her firelizard to
order. **Sometimes, your as insistent as a queen.**
Trill trilled gleefully, apparently pleased by the
statement. She resumed preening between her green
toes with obvious content.

"Growing daily," like all weyrlings, the young man
swore he could virtually see the differences every
day. "And the lovely Anath?" he asked. "I see she
likes your little friends."

"Oh, them. I can't seem to keep them away. They
just flock to her. I don't know what it is but they
like her. And Anath doesn't mind. Infact in those
rare times that she's awake when I'm away, like
during Threadfall, she say's they give her comfort."
Cortana smiled at the thought of her green dragon.

"Look, I wanted to ask you, could you help me pick
out a dress for Turnover? My mother sent me some
marks with a note saying that my father had burned
all my dresses, and refuses to speak of me. So I
have to buy a new one." she sighed. "I just wish my
father would accept me for what I am." Trill rubbed
her head consolingly on Cortana's cheek, and Cortana
felt a wave of sleepy emotion from Anath.

"I can try, but haven't you looked in the stores?"
he asked. The weyr provided for the needs of its
inhabitants, it was that simple. "There might
be something there, and it'll still be a fair amount
of time before we're allowed to go anywhere that you
could buy some clothes," he pointed out.

"Oh, I knew that it'd be a while. But I thought you
could help me when we had the time. I'm not very
good with the weaving craft. I can barely thread a
needle. I have no idea what I'll do when it comes
time to make my own straps." Cortana held her hands
up for emphasis. "Two left hands." she smiled
sheepishly.

"We'll all help each other when the time comes,"
replied her fellow weyrling. "I'll bet a thirty-second
mark there will be something that you and Anath are
better at than me." He grinned to show his intention
was to make a joke. "But if you find something in the
stores and need help to alter it, well I'm your man."

"Thanks V'con. Well I guess I'd better go change
for dinner."
