O'rosin

O'rosin

“I think… I think maybe the couch should be farther away from the wall. Like… here,” Cirina gestured to a spot that was currently occupied by a rug. “And then I pull the rug over here….” She moved it back. “Would that make the room look less empty?”

O’rosin had already helped her move the couch twice and the table three times. It was increasingly clear that there was no configuration that would satisfy Cirina’s need to make the space feel smaller and more full. “Why do these weyrs have to be so big? Your weyr isn’t this big.” Surely it was bigger, but she hadn’t been responsible for filling it.

"You're forgetting that _you_ complained that my weyr was too big and empty." O'rosin pointed out. He'd finally flopped on the couch and shot her a disbelieving look at the thought of having to move it again. "Just do what you did with my weyr."

“I can’t. One,” she held up a finger, “I used up a lot of my lower caverns favors to throw YOUR party and two, everyone is halfway across the continent. It would be too hard to coordinate a party. And I don’t need more stuff, just… less space. Who could need this much space? I don’t know that I’ve ever had a bed that wasn’t a bunk bed.” Cirina flopped dramatically down onto her new couch next to him.

"You totally can. Dragons can travel anywhere." O'rosin pointed out. "Tirraze and R'fayne would come, at least. Invite those girls from Dragonsfall. And…A'radess? Surely he'd come." He reached over the arm of the couch to his bag, pulled out a beer, and handed it to Cirina. "Are you still thinking of transferring back after you graduate? You won't have a bathroom in your weyr anymore."

“One of those ‘girls from Dragonsfall’ is a goldrider,” Cirina pointed out, “she has much better parties to go to. And I don't think A’radess and I are in the ‘meet all my friends at the same time’ place.” Cirina sighed, dramatically, but gratefully took the beer.

“I want to, but Saejith just keeps insisting WE like it here. But I miss the ocean and the weather. And my mom, and my friends… and Aeoluth. My weyr is alright, but you should see some of the bigger weyrs- the family ones have an entire soaking bathtub. Can you imagine just being able to stretch out in a bath all by yourself?” She sounded wistful, “It must be so relaxing.”

"I can't, but I see your vision." O'rosin said. "We had to heat the bath by hand back home. It was 'scrub fast and leave the water warm enough for the next one'." He frowned a little, realizing how disgusting that probably sounded to someone born at the Weyr. "The weather isn't too bad here, is it? It's not Dolphin Cove warm, but at least you won't have to worry about flooding during hurricane season."

“Ugh. Would hate to be the last in that arrangement. It's bad enough in the Weyr baths after Threadfall when everyone is grimy.” Tucking her feet under her, she sipped at the beer, “It’s alright right now, but it's not winter. I mean it's no Dragonsfall, but I only owned two sweaters before I came here, now I have a half a dozen. The hurricanes aren't so bad, you just hunker down in the… well actually I never thought about the poor dragons on their ledges,” she admitted.

"And I'm on the ocean-side." O'rosin said grimly. "Luckily not so high I get flooded, but the ledge gets bad. Aeoluth hates the wet and thinks I'm personally responsible for the weather."

“Well, you _could_ take him somewhere else when it gets nasty,” Cirina said, quick to defend Aeoluth. “You bring that poor boy here if you get any hurricanes this year.”

"He'll live. He nearly bullies Skadith off his own ledge." O'rosin said with a dismissive wave. "You don't want me here at all hours because of a bit of rain. Besides, I don't think I'd fit on this couch."

“I TOLD you this couch was too small. I’ll need a bigger one.” Cirina’s eyes widened with the panic of someone who had never had to buy her own things, “How much are couches?” She fairly chugged down half the beer.

"You could try to request one from the Lower Caverns." O'rosin suggested, "Everything's so new here, maybe they do happen to have a bigger one in storage somewhere."

“Feels weird to ask for extra stuff when I already stole a dragon,” Cirina said.

}:Maybe I stole you,:{ Saejith just sounded smug.

Cirina sighed, “A dragon who claims to have stolen me.”

"You're not asking for extras, you're asking for a replacement. In case your friend needs to stay over when golds rise or hurricanes flood Dolphin Cove." O'rosin joked. "You'll get used to it. My weyr is the first place I've lived alone and it was way too big too. It's weird not hearing anyone snoring."

“It IS,” Cirina said, leaning towards him excitedly, “I just barely got used to not having a bunk bed. Now I’m in some giant echoey cave.”

}:She could still sleep with me,:{ Saejith told Aeoluth, a sulky tone in his voice.

}: She could! O'rosin sleeps with me sometimes,:{ Aeoluth agreed. His mindvoice took on a mournful tone, }: When the rain isn't getting into the weyr, anyway.:{

**You are dramatically misremembering.** O'rosin chided. Still, to Cirina, "Give it a bit of time. If it still bothers you, you can always see if anyone wants to split a family weyr with you."

“I love Aydhara,” Cirina said seriously, “but I do not want to live with her. I don’t think she’d make a very good roommate. Are you and R’fayne still keeping separate weyrs?” She leaned forwards, unable to help her curiosity.

O'rosin's eyebrows raised in surprise at the sudden question. "Yes. We like where we are. Alyena wouldn't give us a bigger weyr, either. We aren't roommates." They hadn't really talked about it and the thought of having to explain 'weyrmates' to his brothers made his stomach uncomfortable.

“Eh, true.” She was silent for a moment, and then said far too casually, “You know I make a wonderful roommate. I respect private spaces. I never have sex in the common room. I share my snacks.”

O'rosin didn't pick up on it as fast as Aeoluth did. }: Cirina would be a great roommate! We'd see her all the time. I wouldn't have to wake you up to visit. Saejith is small, we could both fit- :{

**Saejith is going to be twice that size, buddy.** O'rosin said, then focused again on Cirina. "You've never _had_ a common area to have sex in, so I don't know if I believe you. The last time R'fayne was here he tried to get us to go at it on the beach. Common-room sex might be small tubers for him."

}:We SHOULD be roommates. Cirina would have to do story time every night then,:{ Saejith enthused. }:And she wants the bathtub. I like the lake but she says warm is better.:{

“No, I’ve never had a _private_ area,” Cirina countered. “It’s been all public. I hope you told R’fayne no. It’s rude to make people watch if they don’t want to.”

O'rosin made a face. "I did. No thanks to Aeoluth."

}: No one would see you. I'm very big.:{ Aeoluth said. O'rosin rolled his eyes.

“Aeoluth!” Cirina said, loud and scolding, “You need to remember that manners are important.”

}: I did! Tell her I was being good! :{ Aeoluth low whine echoed from outside.

"He was being very polite." O'rosin answered automatically, then decided to neatly change the subject. "How are you doing being so far away from the ocean? River Bluff was along the coastline too, wasn't it?"

“Yeah. It was different than Dolphin Cove, but still on the ocean.” Distracted from scolding Aeoluth, she tucked her legs back under her. “It’s… ok. I miss my seashell hunting, but the lake itself is easier to swim in than the ocean, so I’m getting better at that. There’s some really pretty areas along the lake shore; it’s not just all sand like Dolphin Cove. Do you ever wish you could go home?”

"Yes. The oceanside weyr makes it feel more like home. If I close my eyes and pretend we're not surrounded by dragons, anyway." O'rosin said. "But I do go home. It's not as much as I want, but the marks go a long way to help out. I wouldn't be able to keep Aeoluth there for long, anyway. He'd miss you too much."

“He’d miss me less if you were keeping up with reading to him,” Cirina said, “it’s good for both of you, you know.”

"He doesn't like it when I read to him." O'rosin said just as Aeoluth complained to Saejith, }: He takes so long that I can't remember the start. And he doesn't do the fun voices that Cirina does.:{

}: That's why you should just come here for bedtime stories,:{ Saejith said with all the wisdom his young brain could muster.

The blue had helpfully relayed the ‘problem’ to his rider, who said, “That's because you aren't doing the voices. The voices are important. Didn't you ever tell your little siblings stories?”

**You're such a snitch.**

Aeoluth whined.

“Don't bully him. I worry about how you're treating him when I'm not around,” Cirina said. “But we’ll be able to visit again soon. Just have to juggle the time zones,” she sighed. “Saejith really threw a wrench in my plans.”

"You get used to it." O'rosin said, though he hadn't. He had to count the time on his fingers before each trip to try and visualize the right time of day. "You'll be busy. Oriene is at Dragonsfall now, isn't she?"

“Yes! And I’m sad, but good for her. Maybe the Dolphin Cove dragons just don’t have good taste. No offense,” Cirina added hurriedly. “I was so relieved when I found out she’d moved. I thought she’d just stopped writing; she did get a little weird when Tirraze Impressed blue.”

"They don't have good taste. Oriene got weird about Riamorth? What, she was worried Tirraze was going to start flirting with her?" O'rosin asked, baffled. If either of them had been weird, O'rosin hadn't noticed. Then again, O'rosin was worried about a lot more than two girls he barely knew. Tirraze hadn't really let it show in weyrling training.

“Well, I thought so. And then when Digger kept coming back from the Dolphin Hall without any answers to my letters…” Cirina trailed off, “But clearly I was wrong! Good for her, although I hate that all my friends are all in different time zones now. I can’t wait until Saejith and I can travel. Really travel.” With a wicked grin, she said, “I can finally go meet your little sister who collects the sea shells.”

"Dragonsfall is in the same area as Barrier Lake, just further south. You don't have to stay up half the night to visit her. " O'rosin corrected automatically, before Cirina's words actually connected in the recesses of his mind, "Hey. Hold on. Don't do that without me. My parents are one visit away from planning our wedding."

“I wouldn’t go without you if you’d take me! Your parents will love me, of course. Everyone’s parents love me,” Cirina said shamelessly. “But I’ll just have to break their hearts- I have a dragon now, I don’t need a man.”

"I appreciate no longer being your backup. I'd also appreciate not saying anything about your plan to seduce me." O'rosin said. This time he could barely stifle the yawn. "All right. If I leave now, I can get a few candlemarks worth sleep. Is the couch fine for tonight?"

“Promise,” Cirina said solemnly, “I’ll be on my best behavior meeting your family. The couch is fine. I guess. Go. But if the weather gets too bad, come here. We don’t need you or Aeoluth getting washed out to sea.” O’rosin didn’t get a warmer farewell than that, but she did rush past him to make sure Aeoluth got a goodbye kiss.
