DCW: An Interesting Mix of Conversation

Writers: Emma, Kaysea
Date Posted: 7th June 2007

Characters: V'con, Xara
Description: Xara and V'con discuss pies, Impression and tunics.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 10 of Turn 4

She was pleased at the way her pastries had turned out, light and golden and
they smelled heavenly. She carefully carried them towards the kitchens door
and turned her back to ease the door open. The dining room was beginning to
fill, the weyrling class loud and noisy as the weyrling's made their way
down towards the servery.

"They smell nice," the soon-to-be wingrider said with a smile as she walked
past.

"Well I'm sure you mother told you to have your mains first, so once you do,
you can have one of these." she grinned. "Thank you for the compliment
though, I made them myself."

"She did, and no doubt she would if she were here in the dining caverns with
me now." V'con grinned, "Can I persuade you to save me one for later?"

"I'm sure I can. Where will you be sitting? I can bring one over, fresh
from the oven I have a couple more batches to go in."

"Over with the other Weyrlings." He gestured to the table the rest of his
class was beginning to fill. "We'll be the noisy ones in the corner."

"You shouldn't be too hard to find then, I'm guessing." she chuckled,
setting down the tray. "I'll keep an eye on you all and when you've
finished I'll bring you some over." Turning she walked back into the
kitchens.

She had brought out a few trays of the pies before realising the Weyrling's
had all finished their main meal. Two tables of Weyrling's were out in the
dining room, the last of the diners and almost ready to return to the
afternoon classes, but she figured they had enough time still to taste her
goods.

"Okay, don't all jump at once, there's plenty for everyone." she joked as
she brought the last tray out.

"They smell even better for the wait." V'con commented as the younger
weyrlings jumped on them.

"Well I'm surprised any of you have room for anything else, I saw what you
all put away during the main course."

She placed the platter on the first table, and watched as they dove into it.
And then emptied the tray of the last platter onto the second table and
dragged a chair over. "Okay, this was bribery - I'll admit it." she threw up
her hands in surrender and grinned at the surprised faces.

"Bribery?" There was a questioning note in the bluerider's voice. "Why would
you need to bribe anyone?"

"For talk, for hints, to help me make up my mind what I truly want to be."
she answered plainly now, Wanting to be honest with herself and the people who
had accepted her so willingly.

"Well if you want to join us for a few minutes." V'con took one of the
pastries and placed it on a plate, offering it back to her. "I mean, I
wasn't sure dragonriding really was for me, until it happened. The Master
Tailor here, thinks I'd have had my knots as a Master Tailor sometime in the
next fifteen turns or so had I not impressed."

"I'm still not sure, though I am here technically as a candidate." she
pulled a face, "And if I don't Impress?" she shrugged, "I'd like to see
what other options I might have - so, what do you think of the pie? I've
been made an offer by one of the cooks to apprentice me as a baker..."

"It was good, really good. The crust was just right."

"Hmm.. That's what I keep getting told. But I still wonder if it would suit
me more than being a dragonrider. I've never been around dragons before.
Well not until I was Searched."

"My Ma's a dragonrider, so I grew up around dragons. I always knew I'd go
out on the Sands, but I left it to the dragons to see if one of them would
want me. If not," he shrugged, "Well I had my Journeyman knots. But they
told me that outside the weyr they said I might find it difficult."

"Oh." she surmised because of the blue knots he wore on his shoulder. "Well
if it's any consolation I didn't fit in outside the Weyr either, and I was
born
there."

"I think it's my dress sense they'd object to, I've confused a few people
here before now." A mischievous grin spread across his face. "In fact I've a
lovely tunic that would really suit you."

Xara laughed out aloud, here eyes meeting his, "You're joking?"

"I'm serious, it's just the colour to match your eyes, and flatter that
lovely figure of yours."

She had never received a compliment on her figure before and the blush that
crept over her face was a deep crimson. "Th..thank you," she stammered,
"though I doubt I'd ever get a chance to wear it."

"A hatching feast maybe?"

"Hmmm. Maybe." Better not to get her hopes up, she wondered? "So who did
you make the tunic for originally?" She suspected himself, but she wasn't
about to make a fool of herself by her summation.

"It was going to be for my Ma, but I got half way through and realised it
would suit me far better."

"And does it?" she asked, trying to stop the grin she felt creeping across
her face.

"Indeed it does."

"Oh, V'con, you do cheer a person." she smiled, "May be one of these days, I
will come up and have a look at this tunic..."

"Well with that smile on your face it seems my work is done. I've got your
interest at least."

"That you have." Xara looked down the table, "And from the look of all of
you, I succeeded in satisfying your hunger."

"Very much so."

"Well...I guess I shouldn't keep you all, you have lessons to get back to."
Xara stood and reached out for the tray nearest her. "Thank you for your
compliments with the pies." she smiled along the row, "And you," she looked
directly at V'con, "If I _do_ Impress I'll be sure to come to you for the
loan of that blue tunic you mentioned."

"I'll keep it safe for you."

With a flash of smile, Xara watched them all troop out of the now almost empty
dining cavern. She wondered if she would ever get to wear that blue tunic V'con
had offered her. Half of her wished she would have the chance to dress up, if
even for just one night, and the other half of her knew she would miss the
creativity of the kitchens. With a sigh, she made her way back to the kitchen
and the tidying up that awaited her.
