He sat there, staring at her, a canine lying at his feet. He seemed to be contemplating something. Was it her hair? Her figure which had come to blossom more and more each turn? Or, perhaps, was it the scar that sliced across her cheek? To the casual observer, this might seem the case, but if one knew who Lirit was, they would know that he was doing no such thing. They just happened to rest upon her as the young harper fell into whatever sort introspection had gripped him.

Karri noticed the harper as she waved goodbye to her tablemates that stood and left for drills. At first she didn't pay him much attention, but then decided that he might like a few minutes of company before she too had to leave the dining cavern. "Hi Lirit, it's Karri. Do you want some company?"

The sound of a voice so close surprised him and Lirit's head twitched, as if he were just waking up from a dream. "Ah, hello Karri." He stated cheerfully when it sunk in that she was speaking to him. "I never mind friendly company. You are friendly, aren't you?"

"Today I am." she assured him with a light laugh. "They're serving my favorite spiced butter today so I'm stuffing myself before I have to get back to the weyrlings."

"Ah, so that's what that smell is." Lirit turned his nose in the direction of the kitchens and breathed in deeply. "Smells quite good. You wouldn't be willing to get a poor, helpless harper a bit would you?"

Karri slid her tray so it was inbetween them on the table. "I can do better, we can share. I got half a loaf as it was."

"So _that's_ why the smell is so strong." Lirit grinned, as if he had known all along. "I accept your very kind and generous offer!"

She watched as he felt along the table for the tray. He didn't have any problems finding the bread or the spiced butter, nor spreading it with a knife. Karri wasn't really surprised. She'd never seen him more than be cautious in his surroundings, perfectly adapted to life in the dark. "So what are you up to today?"

"Well, I have a lesson with one of my teachers after lunch." He set down the knife and lifted the bread. Lirit paused for a moment to inhale deeply of the scent before taking a bite and chewing in slow, careful manner. "Ah, so good." He stated once he had swallowed. "After that, I'll be spending the rest of my day practising. What of you?"

"Oh just working with the weyrlings." Karri replied as she took another chunk of bread and slathered a liberal amount of the spiced butter on it. "They're just getting so big you know? Sometimes I wish they'd just stay all little and cute."

"The riders or the dragons?" Lirit asked in clarification in between the, mouth filling bites of the breads. He took his napkin and wiped his mouth, then grinned. "Don't care for them growing up, eh?"

Karri gave a little laugh. "Oh the riders I like growing up, it's alot easier when they're older. Some of the trouble the younger ones get in to..."

"Oh really." Lirit's eyebrows lifted and he wiggled them merrily. "What sort of trouble?"

"You know how young ones are." she explained, pausing to take another bite. "They don't take the drills as seriously, they know they won't be in Threadfall for turns so they goof off or play pranks or just all sorts of silly things. The older ones take it much more to heart, they pay attention and are focused."

"Because they know that as soon as graduation comes, they're going to be moved into fighting wings." Lirit shook his head. "Thread isn't something I'd want to joke about."

Karri shook her head, "No, and the young ones think they've got turns before they're in danger. It's not until Blooding that it really sets in for them, that hauling firestone sacks is just as dangerous."

"I can imagine." Not very well, but he'd heard the descriptions enough to get something of an idea. Lirit didn't think such a thing would have been for him, even if he _could_ see. "Other than that, things going well?"

"Well enough." Karri said with a shrug as she took another bite of the spiced butter bread. "It's a little chaotic without a Weyrlingmaster, but hopefully T'mahl will find a replacement soon." She'd miss T'mahl as her Weyrlingmaster, he'd been so very nice to her.

"Seems a shame that someone like you can't become Weyrlingmaster." Lirit stated idly as he took the last bite of his bread. "I never could understand why colour mattered in that regard."

Karri laughed, "Because Elliath could never control a gold or bronze. And more importantly, because I'm only sixteen. I've never even fought a full Threadfall before, so I certainly lack the experience."

"Someone _like_ you, not necessarily you. I can understand the age thing." Elleth grinned. "And I guess it's true that a green wouldn't hold much sway over a gold or a bronze, but that doesn't mean a bronze couldn't be a Second or Third."

She thought about it a moment as she chewed, " True, but there aren't that many bronzes to go around really, and it takes a special type to work with the Weyrlings. I wouldn't want three bronzes bossing everyone around all the time."

Karri wasn't quite getting what he was saying, but Lirit brushed it off. It wasn't really important anyway. "I seem to be out of bread." He almost whined, hand groping at the empty plate.

She looked down at the end piece in her hand and passed it over. "Here, have the rest of mine, I need to get back to the barracks."

"I thank you." Lirit grinned as he accepted her offer and then nodded politely to her. "I'm certain I shall see you around. Have fun with the weyrlings."
